Since its birth in Egypt in the first century AD, alchemy has been many things to many people – a branch of natural science; a discredited proto-chemistry; an esoteric art; a route to riches; and a reframing of psychology. For seekers of truth, the rich imagination of alchemy provides a treasure trove of symbols, principles and processes to help the seeker navigate the territory of psyche, and illuminate the way to wholeness.
Drawing on the psychological readings of alchemy by Jung and Hillman, this talk will explore how the concepts of alchemy can be applied to what Jung called, “the rescue of the human soul, and the salvation of the cosmos.”
Tom Crofts is a foreign policy consultant who specialises in peacebuilding, governance and security. He previously worked in the UK diplomatic service for 22 years, serving overseas in Afghanistan and Myanmar.
He takes a keen interest in mythology, eastern and western mystical traditions, soul-making, depth psychology, ritual and energy systems, focusing on imagination practices. He follows in the traditions of Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, Roberty Bly, James Hillman, Michael Meade, Francis Weller and John O’Donohue. He was formerly actively involved with the Triratna Buddhist,
